External Funding Opportunities offered at PhD Level

Genomic epidemiology of malaria conference bursaries

Wellcome Trust

Description: These enable malaria scientists and clinicians to attend a conference on understanding the clinical and biological consequences of genome variation in malaria-exposed populations, to be held in June 2021 at the Wellcome Genome Campus. Bursaries cover up to 50 per cent of the registration fee.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, GB

Description:This enables researchers to gain leadership skills by undertaking independent research in any area of science within the council’s remit, which includes research on plants, microbes, animals, and tools and technology underpinning biological research. Up to 15 fellowships, each worth up to £400,000 at 80 percent of full economic cost over three years, are available.

Freestanding postdoctoral fellowships

National Research Foundation of South Africa, ZA

Description:These aim to increase the number and quality of postdoctoral research fellows in South Africa, enable South African postdoctoral fellows to obtain international research exposure and to encourage international postdoctoral research fellows to undertake research in South Africa. Fellowships include a stipend of ZAR 200,000 per year for up to two years as well as ZAR 50,000 per year towards research expenses.

MRC Applied Global Health Research Board

Description: This new Board funds global health research that is embedded within local contexts in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).  Proposals should focus on ideas that will have real world practical application to improve health.  Principal Investigators in LMICs can apply directly to the Board without the need for a UK partner.  Applications led by UK PIs must include LMIC co-applicants and be founded upon genuine equitable partnerships.

BBSRC FAPESP Pump-Priming Awards (FAPPA)

Description: This scheme is run jointly with Brazil's Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) to pump-prime collaborations between scientists in the UK and the Sao Paulo State, Brazil to promote the exchange of scientists and access to facilities and materials.  It encourages applications under the RCUK-FAPESP lead agency agreement.
