Requirements of Entry
Standard entry to Masters at College level
10 minute oral presentation, plus questions (20%)
Essay, 3500 words (80%)
This course aims to:
■ Introduce students to the Contemporary Music Industries as cultural industries.
■ Theorise the nature of these industries and the roles they play in the production, dissemination and consumption of Music and to develop students' critical understanding of these processes
■ Critically assess the nature of the music within the contemporary cultural industries
■ Evaluate students' own engagement with these industries
■ Compare and assess key texts germane to the area of study.
■ Develop students' skills (including verbal and written) in the presentation of ideas relating to those industries focused on music.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Critically evaluate the role of the music industries in their historic and contemporary contexts
■ Explain and critique the contested nature of the term 'the Music Industry'
■ Critically evaluate key concepts such as cultural industry, copyright and globalisation
■ Engage critically with academic texts germane to the area of study
■ Reflect critically upon their own interaction with the cultural industries broadly and music in particular
■ Present verbally and in writing key concepts in the study of industries focussed on music
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
