Short Description

This course will provide students with an introduction to major topics in the history of medicine of the late 19th and 20th centuries, and to the methodologies, qualitative and quantitative, which historians have employed to explore them. Students will be introduced to the major bibliographical tools and archival resources (including on-line catalogues and databases) for the history of medicine. The Course will also provide background and focus for a research dissertation in an aspect of the history of medicine.

Timetable

2 Hours per week over 10 weeks.

Assessment

Assessment is by essay. Each student must submit two essays of approximately 2,500 words each. Essays must be word-processed, and should include a bibliography and references to the sources of quotations or statistics. Essays are based upon the Seminar sessions.

Course Aims

By the end of the taught part of the course, the students should have:

1. Gained a working knowledge of the history of medicine from 1850 to 2000.

1. Become aware of a variety of different scholarly approaches to the study of the history of medicine and related fields.

1. Developed skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods and in historical interpretation.

1. Improved their written and oral exposition of historical interpretation and argument.

1. Become proficient in literature searching and document location in medical history.

1. Identified a topic for further research prepared to undertake an original research project.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment.
