Short Description

Managers depend on other people to get things done. For this reason, they need to be able to influence and motivate them to contribute effectively to the organisation, to participate in quality improvement initiatives, and build reliable teams.

Assessment

This course will be assessed by means of a group presentation (worth 30%) and related evaluation of individual performance within the group exercise (10%) plus an end of course 2-hour examination (valued at 60% of the available marks).

Course Aims

This course aims to provide participants with a detailed understanding of contemporary contextual conditions that influence the employment relationship and with applied knowledge of the resources, measures, techniques and issues that impact upon modern patterns of work organisation and job performance.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

 

1. Understand the relevance of individual differences, including cognitive and physical differences, for employee behaviours and organisational performance and outcomes. 

2. Explain the significance of diversity to organisational outcomes.

3. Compare different theories of motivation and their implications for employee job engagement and application for work performance.

4. Explain the significance of group behaviour and identify the strengths and limitations of teams for organisations.

5. Contrast power and leadership and the causes and consequences of power abuse for individuals and organisations.

6. Critically examine four approaches to organisational change and consider ways to manage change in and for organisations.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
