This course offers the opportunity to pursue advanced study of Thucydides in translation as a historian and literary artist.

This is a PG (T) course, taught over one semester. Teaching will be by weekly seminar if enrolment is five or more, or by weekly supervision and guided reading if enrolment is less than five.

One extended 3000 word essay (60%). Assessed presentation (40%)

This course aims to:

■ Study the text of Thucydides in detail at advanced level

■ Engage with Thucydides' History as an historical source

■ Engage with Thucydides' History as a work of literature

■ Develop a personal and individual reading and interpretation of this much-discussed ancient author

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Read Thucydides with an understanding and appreciation of the complexity of the text

■ Understand the historical, cultural, and literary context in which Thucydides composed his work

■ Explain and evaluate a variety of modern interpretations of Thucydides

■ Form and express, orally and in writing, a valid critical interpretation of the text, both as an historical source and as a work of literature

■ Display such essay, seminar, and exam skills as the department has stipulated in the Classics

  Handbook.
