Research title: Theo Angelopoulos - Post-Secular Cinema
GLIMPSES IN THE ICONOPOECIA OF CINEMA
From Iconontology to Iconomadism
(The Paradigm: Theo Angelopoulos Cinema of Surviving Images)
Theo Angelopoulos was an acclaimed film director who has been characterized as the last modernist of European cinema. His filmography runs from 1964 until his tragic death in 2012. He appeared on the scene of European cinema in the 1960s. My decision to deal with the theological issues in Angelopoulos's filmography is based on the lack of film criticism and academic research on this aspect of his work. In the present project we intend to explore:
Why did Angelopoulos choose to displace the Eucharistic Theology in his filmography and how did his After-Christendom Post-Secular Cinema propose a Nomadic Spirituality?
a) Post-Secular is a term by J.Caruana and M.Cauchi for a Cinema that raises critical questions about transcendence and immanence in modern life.
b) Eucharistic Theology is the theology of the East Orthodox Church. The center of this theology is the Liturgy or the Eucharist.
c) Nomadic is a term by G. Deleuze and F. Guattari, « The nomad has a territory; he follows customary paths; he goes from one point to another; he is not ignorant of points (water points, dwelling points, assembly points, etc… A path is always between two points, but the in-between has taken on all the consistency and enjoys both an autonomy and a direction of its own. The life of the nomad is the intermezzo.» The nomadic way of life is characterized by movement across space which exists in sharp contrast to the rigid and static boundaries of the State.
