Research title: Additive manufacturing-enabled multifunctional cellular composites

Research Summary

Emerging advances in additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, particularly of high temperature polymers offer the opportunity to revolutionize orthopaedic implants and biomedical devices. However, structural and/or functional failure of implants is a significant risk to the patient’s health, and an enormous economic burden on the healthcare system. The objective of my work is to design and develop AM-enabled micro-architected lattice structures to realize composites with novel properties optimized for location-specific structural and functional requirements for biomedical applications with the focus being on Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), while other materials are being explored as well.

Johannes was awarded a Dipl.Ing. degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on lightweight constructions by Technical University of Dresden, Germany. After graduation, he moved to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to work with Khalifa University.
