Research title: The Conflicts between Copyright Law and Traditional Music: Cultural Hierarchy in Copyright Requirements

Research Summary

My recent research interests include copyright law, music copyright, legal regulation of cultural production, and copyright history.

I am currently completing my PhD. The research examines the effects of copyright law on traditional music in music publishing. Two effects are particularly concerned: whether and how copyright law facilitates the uncompensated and unacknowledged exploitation of traditional music. And whether and how copyright law influences the cultural perception or aesthetic assessment of traditional music, especially compared to art or classical music. The research provides a crossing analysis of publishing processes and legal treatment of traditional music. The research’s original contributions include a theoretical pattern of analysing the dynamic interaction between the ‘hierarchy of protection’ in copyright law and the ‘hierarchy of culture’ in the music sphere.

Before starting PhD, I obtained my LLM by Research degree (Intellectual Property Law) at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and LLB degree (Law) at Nankai University (Project 985 University).
