Research title: : Getting In: understandings of potential, talent and ability, and access to HE for Scottish young people from areas of high deprivation

Research Summary

In my PhD research, I aim to explore the concept of widening access to higher education in Scotland. I am particularly interested in how ideas of high ability, talent and potential are used explicitly and implicitly to support and justify widening access practice. Given the continuing impact of class, disability and ethnicity on student participation and increasing emphasis on fair access by Scottish universities, it is pertinent to examine the concepts underlying the policy, practice and experience of widening access to higher education.
