How can I use my HEAR?

HEAR is a living document – you can view your HEAR at any time and think about what gaps there might be in your skills, knowledge and experience.

‌The HEAR replaces the traditional degree transcript, but it also offers much more besides.

You can read about the benefits that the HEAR has for your learning and professional development below:

A reflective tool

Unlike the transcript, you can view your developing HEAR at any point during your degree. This enables you to keep track of how your skills and experience are progressing, and plan how to use your time at Glasgow effectively.

For example, you might wish to reflect on your progress after your first year at Glasgow. You can look at your HEAR and see at a glance your first year modules and grades, the student societies and sports clubs you led, the prizes you won and other notable achievements.

Doing so will give you plenty to feel proud of, but you’ll probably also identify some gaps in your experience so far. You might have got involved in plenty of societies, but viewed as a whole you might feel you’re short on practical work experience. This will give you some indicators as to how you should spend the next year – you might look into a Club 21 work placement or explore volunteering through the SRC.

All of your key learning experiences are automatically recorded on HEAR, so there’s no danger of forgetting important things along the way. Remember though that what you’ve learnt is more important than what you’ve done – to get the greatest benefit you should use your HEAR to inform deeper reflection using Mahara.

Validating your experiences

Employers recognise the value that extracurricular activities have for students’ personal development – learning new skills, gaining confidence and leadership – but it can hard for them to determine what a candidates’ contribution to a given activity was without validation.

Employers will be able to rest assured that every activity listed on a Glasgow student’s HEAR represents a genuine activity that has been overseen and signed off by a member of university staff. As such, the HEAR acts as authoritative evidence of your achievements.

A conversation starter

The HEAR doesn’t stop being useful to you after your graduate. It’s designed to support existing job application tools such as application forms and CVs, drawing your attention to the significant learning and developmental opportunities you experienced throughout your time as a student.

All of your key activities are automatically recorded on HEAR, so there’s no danger of forgetting important experiences when you come to write CVs and application forms – and referring back to the full range of your HEAR activities will ensure you present a balanced, well-rounded view of your time at University.

What’s more, in the future you’ll be able to send employers a secure link where they can view your HEAR for themselves. In this way, prospective employers will be able to build up a richer picture of your progression to date, and pick up on any elements of your development that you’ve overlooked. It’s a great prompt for steering interview conversations.
