We have 5 competitive teams that play in both Wednesday and Saturday leagues. Our 1st XI currently compete in National League 1 and BUCS 1A with our 2nd XI in Championship Division 2 and BUCS 2A. Ours 3s, 4s and 5s compete in local West District leagues at the weekend and in BUCS 3A and Tier 5 respectively.
We also organise friendlies against other West of Scotland based universities for our development squad and are currently in the process of setting up a casual league.
Our training sessions are held at Garscube Sports Complex at the following times and are shared between our 5 teams:
Monday 4.30-6.00pm and 6.00-7.30pm
The 1s and 2s train twice a week with the second session being held at Glasgow National Hockey Centre from 8.00-9.30pm on a Thursday evening.
We also offer a Development Session on a Tuesday from 5.00-6.30pm aimed at developing skills and providing match time for those not selected for a playing team.
The club has newly appointed coaching staff for our 1s, 2s and 3s with volunteer and assistant coaches helping run the 4s, 5s and development sessions.
Within the GUWHC we recognise the need to play hard as well as work hard and so we have various social events, usually hosted alongside the men’s club, throughout the academic year. These events place members into teams which allows the opportunity to get to know players across the whole club that you may not normally socialise with. The final event of the year is Club Dinner, normally hosted by the union after May exams, in which we celebrate the end of another hockey season as well as club and team achievements.
Every year, the men’s and women’s club also run a tour to an exciting European destination. Previous tours have visited Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam and Porec. This is a fantastic week held after the May examinations to allow one final get together before summer starts.
We cater for all abilities and so the competitive yet social GUWHC really does have something for everyone.
