GU Women's Basketball Club
Glasgow University Women's Basketball Club is a fun and welcoming club for all abilities. With a First, Second and Development team there is a space for everyone at GUWBC – whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced player. Basketball is an excellent way to improve your fitness, gain new skills and meet new friends.
The First Team competes in BUCS 1A and the Scottish National League, which involves playing competitive clubs across Scotland. They train three times a week and also have access to the excellent Strength & Conditioning facilities at the University. Training is challenging but fun, providing you with the perfect environment to improve both your fitness and basketball skills. Finishing 2nd in BUCS 1A in the 2018-2019 season and winning the Glasgow Taxis Cup, the First Team looks to improve even further next season.
The Second Team competes in BUCS 3A and enjoyed great success in the 2018-2019 season, reaching the quarter finals of the Conference Cup and finishing 3rd in BUCS 3A for the first time since 2012. Next year the Second Team is being entered into the Strathclyde Local League to allow for even more game opportunities. They train twice a week and also have access the University’s Strength & Conditioning facilities.
Our Development Team is a new initiative, due to begin in September 2019, with the aim being to cater for those with little or no basketball experience. Sessions will be fun, giving you the opportunity to focus on the fundamentals while also improving your fitness. This is also a fantastic chance to meet new people and socialise in a welcoming environment.
Not interested in playing basketball but still looking to get involved? We also offer table officiating and refereeing opportunities. These are great ways to learn more about basketball while getting to know people too. With the club looking to expand our social outreach initiatives, there will be many opportunities to participate in the club through volunteer coaching, both within the club and in local schools. You can also come along on Game Days to support our teams! All our games are advertised on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
GUWBC holds socials every Wednesday in conjunction with the Men's Basketball Club. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know your teammates. As well as our regular socials we also hold bigger events which in the past have included Subcrawls, Ceilidhs, 3v3 Tournaments, Pub Golf and Bingo! Every year we also host an Alumni Dinner, inviting previous players for an evening of food, drinks and fun.
In 2018-19 GUWBC began a charity partnership with DUNK, a basketball charity based in Accra, Ghana. DUNK provides children from deprived communities in Accra with a safe space to learn, play sports and engage with their peers. For more information on DUNK please visit www.dunkgrassroots.org, or find them on Facebook and Instagram. Throughout the year we host fundraising events for DUNK.
In 2019-2020, GUWBC is also aiming to expand its Social Outreach initiatives. We will be volunteer coaching in local schools regularly throughout the academic year.
The welfare of our members is of the club's utmost priority. Our mental health is equally as important as our physical health, and basketball is a great way to keep both in great shape. Training and attending socials with your teammates can improve mental health in a number of ways. However, university can be a stressful time, with academic pressures and strains. As a club we recognise these pressures and strive to support our members in whatever way possible. We have a designated Welfare Convenor who is contactable at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Launched in 2016, the University of Glasgow Bursaries for Basketball aim to promote excellence within the Men's and Women's University Basketball Clubs to attract the best talent and support athletes in their quest to compete in basketball at the very highest level. As well as financial support, successful applicants will benefit from free access to University of Glasgow’s sports facilities, strength & conditioning and nutritional support, sports mentoring advice, and assistance with negotiating academic flexibility.

With an excellent returning coaching staff and players, this is a fantastic time to join the GUWBC by playing, officiating or supporting. We love to have fun, and compete at the highest levels we can push ourselves to!
