Some University activities may produce waste that has the potential to be infectious to human, animal or plant populations. Strict controls must be place on the management and disposal of this type of material and it is University policy to take steps to make the waste non-infectious before it is removed from the working area. Following this the waste must be consigned as special waste.
The University has appointed an approved supplier for disposal of special waste.
It is important to remember that the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) apply to infectious agents in waste and that the requirements of COSHH should be met when handling or storing them. Advice on COSHH can be obtained from SEPS Biological Safety Adviser.
