SCENE

SCENE (Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment) is situated amidst Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The pioneering teaching and research facility has, since 1946, been committed to understanding the mechanisms that govern the natural world and the impact of humans upon these. Research at SCENE emphasises fundamental questions, but also addresses applied topics related to conservation, resource management and environmentally sustainable development.

The Govan Stones

The Govan Stones, most of which are now housed in Govan Old Parish Church, shine light into an obscure period of history before the nation of Scotland existed; when warlords battled for control of the British Isles and Viking long ships caused mayhem along Scottish coasts and waterways.

Stephen Driscoll, a Professor of Historical Archaeology, is part of The Govan Heritage Trust, which owns Govan Old Parish Church and the Govan Stones. His research team are actively involved in community digs and the preservation of these stones. Our visit here will be followed by a presentation next door at the Pearce Institute.

Glasgow University Union

Founded in 1885, the GUU (Glasgow University Union) was the scene of Scotland’s last ever duel in 1899; swords were drawn and blood was spilled over the election battle for the University Rectorship!

The Union was founded by three of Glasgow University’s biggest societies: Dialectic Society, Medical Churgical Society and the Athletics Club. Together they developed a proposal for a social space, where students – soon to be members of the union – could relax, debate, eat, smoke and drink.
