Published: 26 February 2018

International students are advised to be on the alert for scam telephone calls in which the caller claims to be from the UK Home Office and demands payment for a 'fine'.

Scam Telephone Calls - message from Student Services

Unfortunately, we have had a report of another scam telephone call in which the caller stated that they were calling from the Home Office and made a demand for money in the form of a fine.

If you receive any such calls and are suspicious that the call is genuine, you can take the following steps:

  • do not give out any personal information, or confirm that any personal information they have is correct
  • do not pay them any money
  • report your suspicions to Action Fraud, either on the Action Fraud website or (only if you are in the UK) by phoning 0300 123 2040

UKVI have some helpful guidance on how to spot a scam or what to do if you think you have been a victim of a scam – please see their website here for more information.

If you have any concerns, please contact the International Student Support team.
