St Gallen Symposium Essay Competition

All postgraduate students are invited to submit an essay on the theme 'beyond the end of work' for a chance to attend the prestigious St Gallen Symposium.

Are you a leader of tomorrow? The St Gallen Symposium Essay Competition is now open for submissions on this year’s theme ‘beyond the end of work’.

Successful entrants will qualify for participation in the St Gallen Symposium, the world’s premier opportunity for intergenerational debates. You will share your thoughts, ideas and visions with the global elite and become a member of a truly unique and strong global community.

The 48th St Gallen Symposium will take place from 2-4 May 2018 at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. Expenses for travel, board and lodging will be provided.

To enter, submit a professional, creative and thought-provoking essay answering the competition question:

Robots are coming for your job. How do you augment yourself to stay economically relevant?

Your submission should meet the following criteria:

  • An essay of max. 2,100 words
  • Written in English
  • Submitted by 1 February 2018, 11:59pm (UTC-12)
  • Submitted anonymously
  • The idea and essay must be your own. Group work is not permitted.
  • All sources must be cited and referred to in the respective part of the essay.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate programme (masters level or higher) in any field of study
  • Born in 1988 or later

The authors of the best 100 contributions will qualify as Leaders of Tomorrow and will be invited to the symposium. The very best competitors will have the chance to present their ideas on the symposium’s big stage.

The St Gallen Symposium is organised by the International Students’ Committee (ISC). ISC representative Jason Lee Brilli visited the University of Glasgow on 7 November, and encouraged submissions from students of all disciplines, stressing the importance of a diversity of perspectives at the symposium.

Essay submissions will be evaluated by an independent jury of professors, corporate executives and entrepreneurs.
