Mx joins Mrs, Mr, Miss and Ms

A change has been made to the CoreHR system to allow employees to use the title Mx instead of Mrs, Mr, Miss, Ms etc.

With the assistance of the HR Systems Team and the support of the University’s Gender and Sexual Diversity Champion, a change has been made to the CoreHR system to allow employees to use the title Mx instead of Mrs, Mr, Miss, Ms etc.

The addition of this option will allow staff who identify as non-binary* to make a positive choice rather than being limited to titles which do not accurately reflect their identity.

This move is in keeping with the University’s values of embracing diversity and difference, our aim to create an inclusive environment and is in line with guidance from our partners Equality Network and Stonewall.  This also brings the CoreHR system in line with the student MyCampus system.  Within the wider public and service sectors the option of Mx is already available on driving licences and many bank cards.

Please note current employees cannot select any titles themselves, these are input at the start of employment or amended on production of the relevant form of proof (such a PhD or peerage). Staff wishing to have their title changed to Mx should contact their local HR team to have their records updated.

*Non-binary person - A person identifying as either having a gender which is in-between or beyond the two categories ‘man’ and ‘woman’, as fluctuating between ‘man’ and ‘woman’, or as having no gender, either permanently or some of the time.
