Workshops for pilot rooms

LEADS are running a series of workshops during August aimed at staff who will be using the Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) spaces in the next academic session.

LEADS are running a series of Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) workshops again over the summer of 2017.

The University currently has two Pilot rooms which have been equipped so that they can be used as TEAL spaces, is in the process of refurbishing another suite of rooms and will have even more when the Learning and Teaching Hub is completed in 2019.

During the last two weeks in August there will be six workshops for staff who will be using the TEAL spaces in the next academic session. These sessions will provide technical guidance about the equipment in the pilot rooms and offer pedagogical support for those who want to think about how they could change the ways in which they teach and support learning to take advantage of the opportunities this new spaces offer.

If you are one of the members of staff who we expect to be timetabled into one of the pilot spaces, you should already have received an email from LEADS inviting you to this training and we look forward to seeing you at one of the sessions.

As well as providing a technical demonstration, these workshops will introduce approaches to teaching in TEAL spaces. Active learning seeks to change the classroom from a place where students listen passively to an expert, to one based on dialogue and collaborative construction of knowledge.

Class sessions may include a combination of formal lecturing, collaborative group work by students using shared computers, and discussions between student and lecturer. This represents a substantial departure from current approaches to teaching, based on delivery of information, and it breaks down the current distinctions between lecture, lab and seminar, and between formal and informal teaching.

The workshop will address such questions as how to re-design a course to make effective use of active approaches, how to design learning activities for TEAL spaces, and alternative approaches to the lecture for delivering content.

The dates and rooms available are:

Tuesday 22nd August 10am – 12pm Seminar room 2 Wolfson Medical Building
Wednesday 23rd August 2 - 4pm Seminar room 2 Wolfson Medical Building
Friday 25th August 11am – 1pm 202 St Andrews Building
Monday 28th August 2 - 4pm 202 St Andrews Building
Thursday 31st August 3 - 5pm 202 St Andrews Building
Friday 1st September 10am – 12pm 202 ST Andrews Building

If you will be teaching in one of the TEAL spaces, we recommend that you sign up for a workshop by choosing a slot on the Doodle poll
