University Gardens closure April 11 onwards

As work continues on the University’s exciting new £90million Learning and Teaching Hub it is going to be necessary to close University Gardens to vehicle traffic.

A local council order has just been granted and Multiplex, the University’s main contractor, says it expects the road closure to come into force from Wednesday 11 April.

There will be three staffed gates on University Gardens. The first gate will allow access to the University Gardens itself, with gate 2 allowing access to the site and gate 3 allowing exit from the site. Safety for drivers and pedestrians will be the principal concern. Pedestrians will be encouraged to use the footpath on the upper part of University Gardens. University Gardens is expected to reopen next year, just as the Learning and Teaching Hub nears completion.

UofG receives Guardian University Awards nomination

The University has picked up a nomination in the Guardian University Awards 2018. The nomination is in the prestigious Research Impact category and reflects the work done by the UofG's team of cell and biomedical engineers from the Institute of Molecular, Cell & Systems Biology and the School of Engineering. They have developed material-based technologies to promote bone regeneration that have saved from amputation the leg of a veterinary patient – Eva, a two year-old dog. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 24 April. Farewell to Hospitality Services' Aileen Livingstone

A reception was held in the Kelvin Gallery to mark the retirement of Aileen Livingstone. Many staff and friends were on hand to wish her well and acknowledge all that she has contributed to the life of the University. Aileen has overseen the University’s catering provision to students, staff and visitors over the last 18 years. Major projects included the redevelopment of The Hub into The Fraser Building and, more recently, ‘the barn’ at the Mary Stewart Building (Garscube Estate). Aileen’s work with TUCO (The University Caterers Organisation) has ensured that the student experience is benchmarked with our peer institutions. Colleagues from around the country have visited Hospitality Services to gain ideas for their own projects. Function events, including a number of Royal visits and large international conferences, have benefitted from Aileen’s exceptional team leading and organisational skills. She is widely respected by her staff for her fair approach to management and for being a supportive colleague.

Professor in Public Health and President of the University Athletics Football club, Professor Thomas Ferguson authored classic studies on the origin of Scotland's social and health services. In 1977, he bequeathed his estate to the University with the instruction that the money be used to foster the social side of University life for its staff.
