Professor Renaud took up appointment in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the beginning of February as Professor of Environmental Risk and Community Resilience.

Professor Renaud’s presentation, “Concepts, scientific evidence, policies and practices on ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction”, addressed the main aim of the symposium which was to emphasize the relevance of ecosystems to address disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and sustainable development - a topic which, according to the organizers, was discussed for the first time in Taiwan. Other presentations were provided by colleagues from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations University (UNU), and various experts from Taiwan.

Held at the Center for Condensed Matter Sciences - National Taiwan University in Taipei City, the symposium was attended by more than 230 participants from academia, policy-makers, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector and received considerable local media coverage.
