University wins coveted Times Higher Education Award

The University of Glasgow was a winner at the 2017 Times Higher Education Awards taking home the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development.

University of Glasgow were winners at the 2017 Times Higher Education Awards in London taking home the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development.

The winning entry came from June Cullen, Organisational Development and Learning Lead, for her work on the Leadership Behavioural Framework.

The Leadership Behavioural Framework was designed to support "comprehensive leadership development opportunities for current and future leaders" and to identify effective leadership behaviours that would underpin the achievement and success of the strategy.

The Employee Organisational Development unit's goal was to articulate clearly the key leadership behaviours required to achieve the University strategy in a straightforward and user-friendly manner that was relevant to both academic and professional services staff at three identified levels of leadership - described internally as "Aspiring, Emerging and Strategic".

The team developed an innovative leadership behavioural framework and a custom 360-degree diagnostic tool that reflects the University’s leadership ideals and applies to academic and professional services staff and all levels of leadership.  They were commended on the night for their outstanding efforts.

The Employee and Organisational Development Team say they are delighted to be recognised with this award, and plans are already underway to continue to build on the success of this initiative. In 2018, the Glasgow Professional Competency Framework will be launched for Professional Services staff, which will align to the desire to provide opportunities and approaches to help support staff develop themselves and their careers here at the University. 

Nominations

The Times Higher Education Awards recognise outstanding contributions to UK universities and their staff for exceptional teaching, research, student support, entrepreneurship, collaborations and outreach.

Hosted by comedian Al Murray at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, the ceremony featured three nominations in total from the University of Glasgow across the 19 categories.

In addition to the University's winning entry, nominations were received for Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community (Chasing the Waves) from Zara Gladman, Glasgow Science Festival and Outstanding Student Experience (Let's Talk About X) from Andrew Struan of LEADS.

The winning entry for Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development fought off tough competition from five other UK universities to take home the the highly coveted prize recognising the very best in UK higher education.
