Update to car parking permit scheme

Permit scheme to be reintroduced after summer

Over coming weeks and month we hope to continue to restart more activities across our campuses, and we are continuing our planning to support colleagues back to campus in greater numbers.

As part of this we will be reintroducing the Parking Permit Scheme, which was suspended in April 2020 during the early stages of the pandemic. The scheme will be reintroduced from 1 September 2021.

The principles of the original scheme remain (see below), but in line with the University’s commitment to more flexible and agile working we anticipate issuing a larger proportion of occasional permits in the coming year, allowing staff to book spaces only for those days when they need to travel to campus.

This approach recognises:

  • Our desire to support staff in travelling to work safely
  • Many staff members working from home and only travelling to campus occasionally
  • Public health advice to avoid the use of public transport where possible
  • Changes to travel times, potentially reducing public transport options.

The scheme seeks to manage the limited supply of car parking capacity effectively and is underpinned by principles of fairness and equality.  Permits are awarded on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Disability
  • Requirements for using a vehicle for business purposes
  • Contractual requirements for early or late working
  • Caring responsibilities
  • Access to realistic alternatives for travel.

Operating Arrangements

The scheme will operate between the hours of 08:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday. Parking outwith these times will continue to be free of charge and will not be subject to any permit. Operational staff whose working hours overlap slightly with either the start or finish time of the parking hours will not be required to purchase a permit but will need to register their vehicle with the Parking team (parking@glasgow.ac.uk).

All car parks will be monitored on a daily basis and checks will be carried out on all vehicles parked in University parking facilities. If a space is being used by a vehicle for which there is no permit, then the owner may be served a parking charge notice.

We must continue to ensure that the campus and all parking facilities are safe for pedestrians and other users so cars MUST be parked in marked parking bays.

Visitor parking will continue to be provided under the terms of the current scheme, with bookings payable online either by card payment or by budget code.

Please note that we are continuing to promote and support active travel options, including installation of more bicycle storage facilities on campus; in addition, your attention is drawn to the Cycle Plus scheme.
