Members of SMG meet staff for a wide-ranging discussion

Staff from across the Garscube campus joined members of our Senior Management Group last week in the fourth of a series of networking events.SMG at Garscube (1) 650

SMG members, who gave short introductions to their roles and responsibilities, were:

  • Professor Muffy Calder, Vice-Principal and Head of College of Science and Engineering, who is also the University’s Age Champion. She knows Garscube well as she used to run from Gilmorehill to Garscube as part of her running regime – and she is an avowed cat lover.
  • Bonnie Dean, Vice Principal Corporate Engagement and Innovation, who is also the University’s Race Equality Champion (and a secret cat adopter).SMG at Garscube (2) 650

The event at the Mary Stewart Building was facilitated by James Hamilton, Director of Organisational Development, and also attended by Christine Barr, Executive Director of Human Resources. It was the first of the SMG network events to be held at Garscube.

An open question and answer session covered a wide range of issues, including:

  • Practical steps to promote wellbeing, such as shower facilities in all buildings;
  • How to manage workload including the need to be better at stopping things that are no longer priorities;
  • Outputs from the World Changing Glasgow Transformation programme such as celebrating the success of the redesigned and relaunched recruitment process;
  • Community engagement and what the Govan Initiative will involve including contributing to improved traffic flow;
  • The need for better maintenance of existing and older buildings while still welcoming investment in new campus buildings;
  • Flexible working and whether Flexitime might be introduced;
  • The effectiveness of our anti-bullying policies; and
  • The potential consideration of a Race Equality Charter.

The hour-long event was very well attended, with lots of questions covering diverse topics. A number of colleagues fed back how much they had appreciated the opportunity to network, meet Muffy and Bonnie and to find out about new areas of the University’s work.
