MPA Peer Network: Mental Health Awareness Week

Published: 22 May 2019

The MPA Peer Network celebrates a successful run of wellbeing and charity events, joining forces with UofG Sport and other colleagues.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2019, the MPA Peer Network and UofG Sport joined forces for an innovative series of staff wellbeing events.

Ruth Gurd, Marketing and Membership Manager at UofG Sport and MPA Peer Network Wellbeing Lead, said: “We wanted to do something special for staff to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, and in particular to recognise this year’s theme of body image. The demand and the response we’ve had has been incredible- we’ll definitely run more events like this in future!”

UofG Sport wellbeing experts ran lunchtime sessions throughout the week at Oakfield Avenue and Tay House, with a focus on thinking beyond calories, building physical activity into your daily routine and practicing yoga at your desk. Attendee responses were overwhelmingly positive:

“Thoroughly enjoyed the desk yoga event and hope that more are run in the future.”

“More sessions like this would be fantastic”

“Great session, really enjoyed it! Went down to Byres Road and immediately bought lemons to have in a drink 5 mins before I eat, almonds to have with an apple at lunch time and full fat greek yogurt in place of the low fat alternatives! LOL :)”

Brightest Star

Earlier this month, the MPA Peer Network also hosted a Charity Pub Quiz challenging 50 quizzers and raising £500 for Brightest Star, a charity supporting bereaved families who have lost children. Special thanks go to Lisa Milne of International Student Support who had the idea, wrote the quiz and organised an excellent raffle.

The MPA Peer Network and UofG Sport will continue to come together every month for an ongoing series of lunchtime Workplace Wellbeing sessions, and a variety of other MPA Peer Network events (including the 2019 Christmas Fair!) are in the works.
