It's a Wi-Fi Wonder!

The first day of the academic session saw a huge demand for Wi-Fi access at UofG ... but it was business as usual for the University's IT systems and supporting staff. Information Services not only delivered but are also set to cope with even greater traffic in the years ahead.

The first day of the academic session saw a huge demand for Wi-Fi access at UofG ... but it was business as usual for the University's IT systems and supporting staff. Information Services not only delivered but are also set to cope with even greater traffic in the years ahead, writes Drew McConnell, Information Services.

28,354 devices were connected to the University’s Wi-Fi network on the first day of term. The average connection time was almost 3 hours, which gives a collective total of 83,212 hours, 11,887 working days, or just over 54 working years online. That figure is expected to grow as Information Services continue to improve and update Wi-Fi access across campus.

Leading edge research

Working with one of our leading industry partners, Information Services are piloting external coverage for Wi-Fi on campus. That is correct - outside!

Watch this space for more details but if you sit outside the Fraser Building now you can pick up eduroam on your Wi-Fi device as part of the pilot. There is also an ongoing program of Wi-Fi installation and upgrades across campus. For more information visit: eduroam Wi-Fi

Information services have been providing a series of pop up events round campus to assist new and returning students in all things IT, including a number focussing on Wi-Fi setup. Watch out for more in the next few weeks!

In addition, we will be holding a series of clinics to assist you with any problems you might be having with the Wi-Fi set up of your devices.
