1411   And fair in shadwe was every welle;
1412   But I ne can the nombre telle
1413   Of stremes smale, that by devys
1414   Mirthe had don come through condys,
1415   Of which the water, in renning,
1416   Gan make a noyse ful lyking.
1417   About the brinkes of thise welles,
1418   And by the stremes over-al elles
1419   Sprang up the gras, as thikke y-set
1420   And softe as any veluët,
1421   On which men mighte his lemman leye,
1422   As on a fetherbed, to pleye,
1423   For therthe was ful softe and swete.
1424   Through moisture of the welle wete
1425   Sprang up the sote grene gras,
1426   As fair, as thikke, as mister was.
1427   But muche amended it the place,
1428   That therthe was of swich a grace
1429   That it of floures had plente,
1430   That both in somer and winter be.
1431   Ther sprang the violete al newe,
1432   And fresshe pervinke, riche of hewe,
1433   And floures yelowe, whyte, and rede;
1434   Swich plentee grew ther never in mede.
