Antivirus for Windows

These instructions apply to Windows Vista and later.

Remember: wherever you intend to install it, to download Sophos Endpoint Antivirus you must be either on campus or connected to the campus network via VPN.

Where is your Windows device?

On the campus network or connected via VPN

  1. If your computer already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
  2. Close all applications except your web browser
  3. Click here to download sophwin.zip
  4. Save the file on your local system in a temporary folder (like C:\Temp) and note its location
  5. Use a decompression utility such as 7ZIP to expand sophwin.zip
  6. In the expanded file structure, right-click savinst.cmd
  7. Select All versions of Windows: Run as administrator
  8. Once installation is complete, check the system tray at the bottom right of your screen and ensure the Sophos 'S' Shield is visible

Once installed, Sophos Endpoint Antivirus will update automatically whenever your computer is connected to the Internet.

Off-campus with no VPN connection

Before you can install Sophos on a PC that can't connect to the campus network, you will first need to complete one step on a computer that CAN connect:

  1. ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Click here to download sophwin.zip and save it on a USB stick

The rest of the instructions apply to your off-campus computer:

  1. If your computer already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
  2. Close all applications except your web browser
  3. Insert the USB stick into your system
  4. Use a decompression utility such as 7ZIP to expand sophwin.zip
  5. Navigate to the root of the expanded file structure
  6. Execute savinst.cmd by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. If this option is not available, the account you are using is not an administrator and installation will fail. Switch to an admin account if possible.
  7. Ensure that the Sophos Shield is in the system tray at the bottom right of the screen

Once Sophos Endpoint Antivirus has been installed, it will update from specially configured web sites at the University of Glasgow whenever your computer is connected to the Internet. Any Internet connection will do: you neither need to be on campus nor to use the VPN Service.

You may find that updating will fail until you restart the workstation.
