Antivirus for macOS

These instructions apply to macOS 10.8 and later.

Remember: wherever you intend to install it, to download Sophos Endpoint Antivirus you must be either on campus or connected to the campus network via VPN.

Where is your Mac?

On the campus network or connected via VPN

  1. If your computer already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
  2. Close all applications except your web browser
  3. Click here to download sophos4osx.zip
  4. If the file does not download automatically to the desktop, take a note of the download location
  5. If the Install Sophos... window hasn't already opened, extract the installer by double-clicking the file sophos4osx.zip
  6. Execute Sophos Installer

Off-campus with no VPN connection

Before you can install Sophos on a Mac that can't connect to the campus network, you will first need complete two steps on a computer that CAN connect:

  1. ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Request a Sophos username and password by submitting a request in IT Helpdesk Self Service with the profile Software (Install/Configure/Upgrade) > Anti-Virus Software > Sophos
  2. ON A CONNECTED COMPUTER: Click here to download savosx95sa.zip and store it on a USB stick

The rest of the instructions apply to your off-campus Mac:

  1. If your Mac already has antivirus software installed, remove this and restart your computer before you attempt to install Sophos Endpoint Antivirus
  2. Close all applications except your web browser
  3. Insert the USB into your system
  4. If the Install Sophos... window hasn't already opened, extract the installer by double-clicking the file savosx95sa.zip
  5. Execute Sophos Installer
  6. The final step of the installation process suggests that installation has been completed successfully which, whilst true, is unhelpful because you still need to configure Sophos to receive updates...
  7. Select the Sophos Shield and choose Open preferences
  8. Select AutoUpdateand enter the following details:
    • Primary server:
      • Update From: Company Web Server

Once Sophos Endpoint Antivirus has been installed, it will update from specially configured web sites at the University of Glasgow whenever your Mac is connected to the Internet. Any Internet connection will do: you neither need to be on campus nor to use the VPN Service.

You may find that updating will fail until you restart your Mac.
