Provenance: Joseph Smith (1673/4?-1770), British Consul in Venice:  lot 1300 in 'Bibliotheca Smithiana: a catalogue of the curious, elegant, and very valuable library of Joseph Smith ... Which will be sold by auction, by S. Baker and G. Leigh ... on Monday, January the 25th, 1773'.
William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Smith sale for £2.2.0 according to the annotated BL copy of the Smith sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 8(7).
University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate and book label on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “X.3.4”, overlaying an earlier bookplate - almost certainly that of Joseph Smith.
Binding: Italy, 18th-century vellum;  green leather title label;  sprinkled red-edged leaves.   Size:  285 x 206 mm.

Annotations: Occasional marginal annotations in a humanist hand;  manuscript catchwords on the final verso of each gathering (occasionally missing - cropped by binder);  two sequences of early manuscript numbering “1”-“12”, “1”-“2” in centre of top margin of rectos dividing text into sections;  within each section a separate manuscript foliation in top right hand corner of rectos and a separate chapter numbering inserted next to each initial guide-letter.
