|Binding:||Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, 15th/16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled wooden boards; both covers decorated with intersecting double fillets to form a centre panel surrounded by two frames; the centre panel is divided by double fillets into 71 lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments, each decorated with a separate stamp; the inner frame is also decorated with separate stamps, and the outer frame is undecorated; the numerous separate stamps include a Paschal Lamb within a circle, a ‘ihesus’ scroll and a ‘maria’ scroll, an eagle, a lion passant and a dragon stamp (each within a lozenge), a rectangular stamp of a crown flanked by the letters ‘I’ and ‘O’; several of the stamps are identical to stamps tentatively assigned in Weale-Taylor (no. 207, pl. XVI nos 7-10) to the Augustinian Convent of Coesfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia; remains of two brass clasps (catch plates on front board); spine undecorated and title label added in the 19th/20th century; without pastedowns and with 19th/20th-century flyleaves inserted (original endpapers and flyleaves lost); indistinct manuscript title on fore-edge ‘Serm[ones] medi’. |Decoration:||Part VII: on a2r a six-line initial “S” is supplied in blue with reserved white and decorated with purple and green pen-work which extends into the inner margin; similarly decorated initials supplied on a2v, e8v, h6r, z4v, G9r; other principal initials supplied throughout in alternate red and blue; paragraph marks and capital strokes in red throughout.|
