Binding: Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards;  front cover decorated with double and triple fillets to form eight triangular compartments radiating from the centre;  rear cover divided by intersecting double fillets to form four lozenge-shaped and eight triangular-shaped compartments;  both covers further decorated with three circular stamps (an angel playing a psalterium, a winged bull, and a rosette), a triangular stamp depicting a stag, a floral stamp, and a fleur-de-lys stamp;  spine compartments decorated with the rosette and the floral stamp;  remains of two brass clasps with chased catch plates on front board;  fragment from a parchment manuscript with text in German used to guard final gathering;  19th-century endpapers.   Size: 219 x 147 mm.

Annotations: Partially deleted inscription on [con]8r “Anno d[omi]ni 1562 [...]”;  alphabet in ink in a 16th/17th-century hand on [con]8v;  19th-century lot or catalogue number “272” in pencil on front pastedown and repeated in ink on a circular label at foot of spine.
Decoration: Capital strokes in red on a1v-a3r.
