Binding: Scotland, 19th-century calf, covers blind-tooled to a panel design;  marbled endpapers;  red-edged leaves;  binder’s ticket on verso of front free endpaper “J. Carss & Co. Bookbinders, 31 Argyle Street, Glasgow”;  pencil note by binder on rear free endpaper giving date and price “Oct 20/69 10/6”;  binder’s job number “101/9” in pencil on π1r.   Size:  300 x 205 mm.

Annotations: Lengthy annotation on π1r in a 16th-century hand including references to Thomas à Kempis and to the “hostis antiquus”;  occasional “nota” marks and pointing hands in brown ink and in red;  occasional marginal annotations in a 17th-century hand, including a benediction on n1v;  “No 2.” in ink in an 18th-century hand on π1r and the word “Duplum” in pencil in a 19th-century hand on the same page.
Decoration: Principal initials supplied in red and blue with reserved white, or in red with penwork decoration in brown ink, or in blue with similar penwork decoration;  other initials supplied throughout in red or blue (some with marginal flourishes);  capital strokes and paragraph marks in red throughout.
Imperfections: None.
