A Very Short Introduction to Knowledge Exchange Support

Description:

There are many routes to take your ideas outside the university and to engage with external partners.  External engagement is a vital first step to create research impact. This workshop will introduce the support available within the university for knowledge exchange activities. 

By the end of this workshop you will have an opportunity to:

  • explore the different routes available for knowledge exchange including partnerships, commercialisation and spin outs and public engagement. Illustrated with case studies
  • determine the most appropriate method for you
  • meet the key people who can support your activities, including support to engage with external partners, to protect your ideas and to find appropriate funding
  • work with peers to identify the most productive step to advance your current knowledge exchange activities

This two and a half hour course is for researchers considering their career options, particularly those who are thinking of moving out of academia.  It will help participants to have greater awareness of their transferable skills, to reflect on what is important as they develop their career, and to be aware of the resources available for support.

Getting the First Lecturing Job

This interactive workshop is for early career researchers aiming to make the transition into their first lecturing job.  It will focus on the experiences and skills looked for in lecturers, how to gain these and consider how to demonstrate these to employers.  During the workshop we will look at on the results of a survey published of academic staff in UK universities and hear from new lecturers on what helped them achieve their first lecturing post.

Communicating Effectively

Description:

Communicating clearly with others and with the desired impact is a skill that is essential for many staff, however it can be challenging at times.  This workshop focuses on the critical elements for effective interpersonal face-to-face verbal and non-verbal communication and can help to build self-confidence through various communication techniques.

By the end of this workshop you will have an opportunity to:

  • understand the key elements of communication and the factors impacting effective communication
  • understand the communication process and be able to identify the opportunities and challenges in getting your message across with the desired impact
  • be able to identify different communication styles in action and flex your style to influence others
  • be able to identify different ways to convey your message clearly, concisely and assertively, and ensure you have understood the message others are conveying to you
  • experiment with aspects of persuasive communication

Leading without Formal Authority

Description:

In academic careers individuals often find themselves in a leadership position where they have no formal authority - for example managing the delivery of a teaching programme or leading a collaborative research project.  This workshop explores the unique challenges associated with this way of working and will provide practical advice on how to build leadership credibility and overcome challenges of having no ‘line’ authority.

By the end of this workshop you will have an opportunity to:

  • understand the different relationships that exist today and manage expectations accordingly
  • understand why rational argument alone is often not persuasive
  • identify ways in which you influence more effectively

Managing Research Projects – for MVLS / Science & Engineering

Description:

This two day workshop focuses on how to scope and manage a research project and understand the importance of the management of risks and relationships. It develops participants’ awareness of how to manage simple and complex projects; working with stakeholders; how to lead and manage diverse teams as a project manager / in a Principle Investigator role; and how to plan, monitor and evaluate project success.  Course participants should leave with a toolkit of project planning tools and techniques to equip them to lead successful research projects.

Target Audience:

This workshop is suitable for Early Career Researchers.

By the end of this workshop you will have an opportunity to:

  • understand the core principles of project management
  • understand how to scope, lead and manage successful research projects
  • develop an understanding of how to effectively identify and manage risks

Managing your Research Data

Description:

Publicly funded research is a public good. When data are created as part of academic research, they should be carefully stored, managed and, wherever possible, shared. Research Councils and funding bodies increasingly require evidence of adequate and appropriate provisions for data management and curation in grant funding applications.

This course is for researchers and research support staff who want to learn more about developing good data management and curation practices. Attendees will learn about data management in an accessible way that they can apply to their own work. Topics will include: the data lifecycle; funder compliance; managing sensitive data; and what should happen to your data after the end of a project. The session will be illustrated with real-life examples.

As your academic career progresses you will often become a line manager for staff – most commonly research staff working on funded projects.  Managing people and resources can be challenging, especially for staff who may be new to these responsibilities. This workshop explains the roles and responsibilities of a manager and provides a foundation for best practice approaches and techniques to achieve results with your team.

By the end of this workshop you will have an opportunity to:

  • identify the role and key responsibilities of effective managers
  • identify the characteristics of effective management practices
  • plan and prioritise your workload and delegate effectively
  • understand the performance cycle and how to effectively manage performance to enable them to perform at their best

All research staff have an important role to play supporting research integrity, especially those who manage or supervise others. This session will support you with this: we will outline the breadth of the topic with a focus on areas relevant to humanities / social science researchers. You'll be encouraged to reflect on the specific challenges and opportunities for your role/subject area as we explore areas such as peer review, self-plagiarism, questionable research practices, open research, research misconduct and good data management.

The session aims to equip researchers with a good understanding of best practice for approaching research, collaborations, publication and innovation plus resources and support that can help. We will use case studies to explore potential pitfalls or grey areas that can lead to research misconduct.

(Note: whilst ethics is an important component of research integrity, ethics training is a separate College provision so we do not cover this.)

Understanding Data Management Plans

Description

The University and most funding bodies now require researchers who collect data of some sort as part of their work to write a Data Management Plan (DMP). Plans typically state what data will be created and how, and outline the plans for sharing and preservation, noting what is appropriate given the nature of the data and any restrictions that may need to be applied.

This course is for any staff who may be required to write or review DMPs, as well as all researchers who collect data as part of their work, and for support staff. It offers an introduction to data management planning, using example DMPs to help demonstrate what makes an effective plan. By the end of the session, researchers will be comfortable writing and reviewing DMPs, and will understand where to seek further guidance. The course will also provide guidance on using DMPonline, an online tool supporting data management planning.
