To book onto our open courses please login to the HR Self Service Portal.  Select the Learning and Development option from the menu on the left hand side and search for your chosen course by category or course name.  On booking a course your line manager will be prompted to approve (or reject) your request.

Developing your Career as a Glasgow Professional

Description:

Taking responsibility and ownership of your Personal Development and career is a vital part of being a Glasgow Professional. Understanding and having a working knowledge of the framework will be crucial in you engaging with formal and informal learning.

This workshop is an interactive discussion on the framework and how we can all use it to further our careers at University of Glasgow.

Target Audience:

This workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in developing their career using the Glasgow University Framework

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • see all situations as potential learning opportunities
  • focus on being a role model by devoting time to your own development
  • engage in formal and informal learning and development activities
  • updating professional/ specialist skills
  • engaging positively with the Glasgow Professional Framework
  • seeking, accepting and acting upon feedback, and learning from it

Introduction to Coaching

Description:

Coaching as an approach to development, can help staff develop new skills and build confidence in dealing with real workplace opportunities and challenges.  This workshop is an introductory session to coaching as an approach to supporting and developing others in the workplace, either as part of a line management role or as a supportive colleague.

Target Audience:

This workshop is suitable for new line managers or for staff without formal line management authority who would like to learn how coaching can support development and enhance performance.  

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • understand what coaching is as an approach to development
  • identify and explore the skills required for effective coaching
  • be introduced to a coaching model and understand how to put it into practice
  • start to consider your own coaching style
  • consider how to apply coaching techniques to enhance development support of others
  • develop action plans for coaching your team

Introduction to Mentoring

Description:

Mentoring can be an effective way to develop a range of skills and enhance knowledge by connecting, sharing and broadening perspectives between staff with experience and those who are aiming to looking for career development. This workshop is an introduction to mentoring and provides an opportunity to explore the roles and responsibilities as well as practice the skills necessary for effective mentoring.

Target Audience:

This workshop is suitable for mentors and mentees. As a note, this workshop is not specifically designed for ECDP, further information regarding mentoring within ECDP can be found at: Mentoring

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • define what mentoring is and how it can contribute to development
  • understand how to establish and build a productive mentoring partnership and the roles and responsibilities of both the mentor and mentee
  • understand how to set up mentoring for success and the key factors to consider
  • understand how to structure a mentoring session
  • be aware of mentoring pitfalls, adopt tools for overcoming obstacles to successful mentoring arising from personal, team and organisational issues
  • practice the skills of effective mentoring
  • adopt reflective practices and develop an action plan for mentoring
