To book onto our open courses please login to the HR Self Service Portal.  Select the Learning and Development option from the menu on the left hand side and search for your chosen course by category or course name.  On booking a course your line manager will be prompted to approve (or reject) your request.

An Introduction to Managing Successful Projects

Description:

If you are responsible for planning, managing and monitoring projects, this workshop will introduce you to a range of Project Management concepts and skills. Please note you must have a suitable project to work on at this session.  

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • identify how success and quality is defined for projects
  • explore how to develop project delivery plans within a University environment
  • explore how to work with stakeholders and how this can support project success
  • explore how you can use risk management to anticipate and actively manage the challenges within your project
  • identify mechanisms for monitoring the progression of the project and the options available for when the project is not progressing as well as anticipated

Balancing a Busy Workload

Description:

Many jobs require balancing a busy workload to effectively carry out a range of responsibilities. This is especially so during times of change. This course explores a range of tools and options to help you improve your efficiency and effectiveness.  This workshop is delivered over two half days, a month apart and participants must attend both dates.

Target Audience:

This workshop may be of interest to anyone who struggles to keep on top of their workload. The workshop is in two parts. The first half day explores tools and techniques for balancing your workload and participants can then practice applying them in the workplace.  The second half day will focus on identifying barriers encountered in applying the tools successfully and how to overcome them.  Suitable for academic staff completing the Early Career Development Programme (ECDP).

Before the workshop you will be sent a pre-reflection preparatory work document to be completed in advance of your attendance.  

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • discover techniques for planning and prioritising (day-to-day and project work)
  • examine a range of tools for organising paperwork, emails etc.
  • explore techniques on how to communicate assertively
  • find clarity about what is (and isn’t) your role

Supporting Successful Projects

Description:

This course will develop the supporting team member’s understanding of the project management process and enable them to contribute effectively in supporting the project at all stages. 

Target Audience

This workshop may be of interest to colleagues who are either team members involved in the delivery of projects, or administrators supporting projects.

During the workshop, there will be an opportunity to:

  • develop an understanding of project management in order to be able to contribute effectively
  • explore how you can contribute to the development of project plans
  • understand your role in minimising risk and managing changes in scope
  • identify mechanisms for reporting project progress
