Q&A with Head of Aerodynamics, McLaren Racing, Tony Salter

Time: 1430 - 1530

Introducing Head of Aerodynamics, McLaren Racing, Tony Salter

Tony Salter is Head of Aerodynamics at McLaren Racing, leading a department of 100 people in the aerodynamic development of their Formula 1 cars.

Graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1998 with a 1st Class BEng(Hons) in Aerospace Engineering, Tony had his ambitions set on working within Formula One.

After graduating he relocated to Bicester, Oxfordshire in 1998 to join a graduate engineering placement scheme at Reynard Racing Cars, which at the time was a leading racing car constructor for the American IndyCar racing series. Following a year on the scheme Tony took on a development role in their newly formed Computational Fluid Dynamics department which was pioneering the use of CFD within motorsport aerodynamics.

In 2001 Tony joined Williams Formula One Team as an Aerodynamicist, spending 10 years in aerodynamic development before leaving in the role of Principal Aerodynamicist, moving with his family to Hinwil, Switzerland to join Sauber Motorsport and their F1 team. With a keen interest in cycling, outdoor & winter sports, working and living in Switzerland for 4 years was a perfect way to find balance with the demands of a high-pace and often intense working life.

In 2014 McLaren recruited Tony in a reorganization of their Aerodynamic Department, joining them in the role of Principal Aerodynamicist. He was promoted to Deputy Head of Aerodynamics in 2019 before taking over as Head of Aerodynamics in January 2020.
