Alice Julia Marshall was born in Stirling in  1891  and educated at the  University of Glasgow. She gained the qualification MB ChB in  1917  and then spent virtually the whole of her career in the Pathology Department of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where she held the positions of Assistant Pathologist and Lecturer in Pathology to the University of Glasgow.
She retired in 1956 and died in 1987.  Although Alice Marshall never married it was understood amongst their colleagues that she had an intimate relationship with Professor J A G Burton
