Mrs Hansford was born Alice Elizabeth Ward in Glasgow in 1936.  Her father was an engine fitter at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Dalmuir. 
She received primary education in Dumfries and Clydebank and then attended Notre Dame High School for Girls in Glasgow.  After working in bookshops in Glasgow she moved to London in 1959. 
She married Anthony Hansford in 1961 and they have three daughters.  She joined the civil service in 1971 as a Clerical Assistant and retired from the Department of Trade as an Executive Officer in 1992
