The Renfrew District of Argyll and Clyde Health Board was established in 1974 as the successor to the Board of Management for Paisley and District Hospitals. It was responsible for Barshaw, Broadfield, Caldwell, Darnley, Dykebar, Elderslie, Hawkhead, Johnstone, Merchiston, Paisley Maternity, Riccartsbar and Thornhill hospitals, Royal Alexandra Infirmary, Royal Victoria Eye Infirmary, Barrhead Health Centre and various clinics. In 2005 the Argyll and Clyde Health Board was scrapped and authority for this district passed to NHS Greater Glasgow.
