Administrative / Biographical History
Glasgow Western Hospitals Board of Management was formed in 1948 and was responsible for the Western Infirmary, Glasgow Eye Infirmary, Glasgow Orthopaedic Clinic and the Killearn, Knightswood, Royal Beatson Memorial and Ear, Nose and Throat hospitals. In 1968 Gartnavel Royal Mental Hospital (which had previously had its own Board of Management) was brought within the scope of this Board of Management which was renamed the Glasgow Western (and Gartnavel) Hospitals Board of Management accordingly. This amalgamation was carried out partly to facilitate the construction of the Gartnavel General Hospital which opened in 1973. In 1974 this Board of Management was succeeded by the Western District of the Greater Glasgow Health Board.
