Lecture | Where Body Meets Geography: Drawing as a Nomadic Practice in Contemporary Art

Dr. Stephanie Straine, Curator of Exhibitions and Projects at Modern Art Oxford

As an ancient communication technology that predates the written word, drawing’s links to the past and the future are dynamic and subject to constant revision. The works in Hand Drawn, Action Packed – and by many other artists – make use of seemingly conservative or traditional drawing materials to produce artistic positions of radicality, be that through historical references, material processes, or political narratives. This talk will consider a cartographic approach to the idea of drawing as a nomadic practice, offering a rethinking of the boundaries of contemporary drawing that embraces both its material specificity and hybridity.
