Peter the Great, 1672-1725, Tsar Peter I of Russia, 1682-1725. Peter the Great made Russia a leading European state, by centralising government, modernising the army, creating a navy and increasing the subjection of the peasants. He was keen to learn and was very active. From 1697 to 1698 he travelled in Western Europe and built up a store of naval, military and scientific knowledge for later reforms. Peter became attracted to Catherine Skavrenska (1684-1727) and secretly married her; she was recognised as his consort in 1712. Peter died on 28 January 1725.
