2011 is an exciting year for The Hunterian.

Redevelopment of the Hunterian Museum is well underway and September will see the opening of a new Roman gallery, new visitor friendly opening hours, a new website and the launch of a Friends scheme - The Hunterian Friends.

Regular visitors will know that the Hunterian Museum is currently closed to install the new Roman gallery but the Hunterian Art Gallery and The Mackintosh House remain open as usual.

The Museum re-launch has been re-scheduled to September to coincide with a week of events and activities which will showcase all the Hunterian Museum spaces.

The Roman gallery is a new permanent exhibition which presents The Hunterian’s unique collection of monumental sculpture and other important Roman artefacts recovered from the Antonine Wall. It will explore the interaction between the people of Scotland and the Roman occupation, illustrating life on the edge of the Roman Empire 2000 years ago. Many items will be on display for the first time, allowing greater access to The Hunterian’s internationally acclaimed Roman collections.

Also in September, The Hunterian will mount a major exhibition in the Art Gallery, dedicated to Scottish artist J. D. Fergusson, a key member of the internationally renowned Scottish Colourists. This new exhibition focuses on Fergusson’s love affair with France and features recent acquisitions and special loans, including three important works from the French government, on display in the UK for the first time since 1931.
