Why did you decide to become a STEM Ambassador?

I have worked in a hospital environment as a cardiac physiologist for many years and have found that not many people are aware that this post exists, or have even thought about a career in cardiology.

When people think of careers in the NHS they think of doctors or nurses, as a cardiac physiologist I wanted to inform people about the work I do as part of my job.

Which area of STEM are you most passionate about?

Since leaving school I have studied and worked in careers that have all had a Science aspect.


What is your favourite thing about being a STEM Ambassador?

My favourite thing is when I give pupils a stethoscope to listen to their heart, I can tell the exact moment that they can hear their heart beat as their eyes get big with excitement and you see their smile start to appear across their face.

Describe your favourite or most memorable activity so far:

My favourite activity is when pupils attend the work experience programme that I have set up at my workplace.  I feel that it’s hard to describe certain cardiac tests so the best way to understand what we do is to bring pupils in to the cardiac department and show them the tests that we carry out on our patients.  Pupils get hands on experience which they don’t always expect and become engrossed in the activity.

What STEM Ambassador activities do you have planned for the future?

I have a few career events to attend in the near future where I take an assortment of equipment used within my cardiac department for pupils to look at, touch and try.  At these events we inform pupils of the qualifications required for the various posts within a cardiac department.

What advice would you give to new STEM Ambassadors?

When first starting up planning is so important.  Decide on what kind of event you would like to do and take it one event at a time. Remember the ages of the pupils will have an impact on how you speak  to them, what equipment you bring and how long you can hold their attention.
