Introduction

Papua New Guinea is celebrating 50 years of independence this year. Long before 1975, Scottish and other British colonists and missionaries played a prominent role in the history of Papua New Guinea. As a result, many fascinating collections of traditional Papuan art have been donated to museums throughout Britain, including The Hunterian.

The Mariwai Project aims to highlight Papuan artistic heritage in museums around the world. As part of our marking this golden jubilee for PNG, join Hunterian World Art Curator Andy Mills in appreciating a selection of Papuan artworks from The Hunterian's collection, and to learn the stories behind how they came into the University's care.
