Soils play a vital role on Earth and are a key component in a wide range of dynamic processes. These include plant growth, nutrient cycling, regulation of atmospheric gases and storing carbon for hundreds to thousands of years.
Soils are not inert and the direct or indirect actions of humans can alter or disrupt the way soils normally function.
