No previous experience of print-making required. Limited spaces available.

The role of printed wax cloth in fashioning African history, culture and identity weaves together two special events hosted at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in the heart of the Merchant City. In amongst the artwork of ‘Domestic Bliss’ – an exhibition with explores the global reach of our own domesticity – these sessions trace the personal and historical narratives of this iconic textile and celebrate its influence on contemporary African fashion.

Fashion scholar Sequoia Barnes leads a participatory workshop in which pattern-making is explored as a form of storytelling and meaning-making, an expression of heritage and even resistance. Inspired by Aiwan Obinyan’s Wax Print and African fashion short films, workshop participants will be invited to share their creations in a brief fashion show following the evening’s screenings.

* Why is this workshop for people of colour (POC) only? We understand that events, especially in museum spaces, are often overwhelmingly white, and sometimes a POC-only workshop can provide a more comfortable and affirming environment for participants. Thank you for understanding the need for this POC space.

This event is co-presented by Africa in Motion Film Festival and the School of Culture & Creative Arts as part of its 2019-20 ‘Material/Immaterial’ season, in partnership with the Gallery of Modern Art as part of its ‘Domestic Bliss’ programme.
