Time: 17:30 - 21:00
Venue: Andrew Stewart Cinema, Gilmorehill Halls, Glasgow G12 8QQ

A special programme of three films celebrating the work of John Cage and Merce Cunningham and the ways in which they explored performance and technology.

Charles Atlas’ film portrait - Merce Cunningham: A Lifetime of Dance (2000) - is packed with rare archive footage of the early days of Merce and his company, including an improvisation devised especially for the film as well as excerpts from Pond Way (1998) and BIPED (1999). This will be followed by screenings of two short films produced by Experiments in Art and Technology: John Cage, Variations VII (2008) and Robert Rauschenberg, Open Score (2007), both of which use archival footage of the ‘9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering’ performances in New York in October 1966.

Light refreshments provided.

Mewantemooseicday 2019

These screenings introduce ‘Mewantemooseicday 2019,’ an education and performance project that brings together students and faculty from the University of Glasgow, the Glasgow School of Art, and Glasgow Clyde College, following the model of the classes Cage taught at the University of California, Davis in the autumn of 1969. Mewantemooseicday 2019 marks not only the 50th anniversary of this special Cage event but also celebrates the centenary of his partner and life-long collaborator, the choreographer, Merce Cunningham.

The project was devised and developed by Cage specialist and cultural producer Victoria Miguel, in collaboration with the University of Glasgow, the Glasgow School of Art, and Glasgow Clyde College.

We are grateful to Julie Martin of Experiments in Art and Technology and the Merce Cunningham Trust for their generosity in sharing these films with us. We also wish to thank the Merce Cunningham Trust, the University of Glasgow’s Chancellor’s Fund, the Glasgow School of Art’s Sustainability/Friday Lecture Series and the Christ Stewart Group for their financial support. We are enormously grateful for the continued support of the Merce Cunningham Trust and the John Cage Trust throughout this project.
