Translation, Diaspora and Nomad Thought

A series of talks, film screenings, a poetry reading, an art exhibition organized by the Research Network in Existential Philosophy & Literature

Tuesday 29 May (9 am – 7 pm): Yudowitz Lecture Theatre (Wolfson Building) & Kelvin Hall

Wednesday 30 May (10 am – 7 pm): GalGael Institute & Alliance Française, Glasgow

Thursday 31 May (3 pm – 6 pm) Institut Français, Edinburgh

Our plenary speaker will be Kenneth White, a well-known Glasgow-born philosopher and poet, the founder of the geopoetics international movement. For several decades, Kenneth White has been the most assiduous ambassador of Scottish culture and Gaelic heritage in France, where he settled after completing a doctorate at the Sorbonne. He is well-known around the world for his conception of the ties between the configuration of the landscape and a nation’s deep spiritual roots, but also as the promoter of cultural dialogue and intellectual exchanges between Scotland and France. From 1983 to 1996, he was Professor of Twentieth Century Poetics at the Sorbonne, and later Visiting Professor of Literature at the University of the Highlands and Islands. He is currently an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Kenneth White’s visit to Glasgow will mark a very significant step in the process of renewing the Auld Alliance between Scotland and France, in the context of the ongoing negotiations about the post-Brexit future of HE in the UK.

The full programme of events include an international conference at the University of Glasgow, organised in conjunction with a virtual exhibition, and a poetry reading by Kenneth White at the Hunterian Art Gallery (Kelvin Hall) on the 29th May. Participants will also have the rare opportunity to watch and take part in a Q&A session on the film Nomad (BBC Scotland, 1997) which documents the life and work of Kenneth White in Scotland and France. On the 30th May, the programme continues with a visit to the GalGael Trust and a guided tour of the Govan Stones at the Old Govan Parish Church in the morning, followed in the afternoon by a series of public talks and the screening of a French documentary film on Kenneth White’s life and work, Les chemins du Nord profond, followed by a Q&A session and accompanied by an exhibition provided by the Association des Amis et Lecteurs de Kenneth White at the Alliance Française de Glasgow. On the 31st May, Kenneth White will give a public talk at the French Institute in Edinburgh, followed by a conference, a film screening and a Q&A session.

New research collaboration will be established with colleagues from research clusters at the Universities of Aberdeen, Grenoble and Toulouse, working on Scottish Literature in France and the UK. This event will prepare for the final event in the project gathering the main network scholars and non-academic stakeholders from Scotland, the rest of the UK and France in order to re-appraise and promote the Franco-Scottish philosophical connections from the 18th century to the present.

Participation for the conference is free but registration is required for catering purposes. To register please go to:
