The University of Glasgow End of Life Studies Group is hosting a postgraduate workshop on the act of witnessing at the end of human and non-human life.
This two day workshop in June 2018 is organised by and for postgraduate students, giving students an opportunity to present and discuss their works in progress. This could be a theoretical or methodological problem, an ethical dilemma, or an exciting concept related to witnessing at the end of life.
Accommodation and food will be provided.
Themes include, but are not limited to:
• Political, ethical, or experiential challenges in conducting research which includes witnessing end of life
• Theoretical and methodological challenges in representing experiences of witnessing end of life
• Witnessing institutionalised end of life
• Witnessing sudden end of life
• Witnessing non-human end of life

• Accepted participants must submit a paper up to 2,000 words by 14 May 2018
Your workshop abstract
We are looking for active works in progress, not conventional conference abstracts. Please include:
• A brief description of what you will be presenting (is it a part of a methodology/discussion section of a dissertation, a poem for publication, etc.)
• How it will benefit from being workshopped
• Where it fits into your overall work
• How it fits within a particular workshop theme
Workshop format
• We are not seeking polished presentations and there will be no use of powerpoint
• All pieces will be pre-circulated among participants to read to ensure robust engagement with every piece
• At the workshop, authors will discuss their work for 5 minutes, an assigned discussant will give their views for an additional 5 minutes, and then lead a group discussion for the remaining 15 minutes

• The workshop will include a talk by Dr. Naomi Richards of the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group
• Overnight hotel accommodation and set meals will be provided. This includes an evening dinner and social event.
• Participants must cover their own travel expenses.
Background
This workshop coincides with the 50th anniversary of Dame Cicely Saunders' opening of St. Christopher’s Hospice, founded on the importance of simply being present, or witnessing, at the end of life.
Bearing witness is an inherently ambivalent act, requiring a simultaneous intimacy and distancing between the watcher and the events being witnessed. Witnessing at the margins of life and death is further complicated by philosophical and moral ambiguities, discourses that legitimize certain ways of seeing, and ongoing reconfiguration of categorical boundaries.
Our goal is to create an interdisciplinary space for taking risks in thinking about how to innovatively represent these experiences and concerns. Our workshop welcomes, but is not limited to students from the humanities, social sciences, theology, medicine, nursing and allied health, engineering, veterinary, and environmental sciences.
